Addiction Counseling Exam Study Guide and Practice Test
The Addiction Counseling Exam is administered by the Association for Addiction Professionals (NAADAC).
Requirements
Candidates must complete at least three years of supervised experience as a drug or alcoholism counselor.
270 Contract hours of training and as an educator in studies of addiction.
Minimum of 6 hours of Ethics Training.
Exam details
The exam is conducted three times a year in March, July and November.
Candidates need to send in their application at least 60 days prior to the exam.
The test comprises of 250 multiple-choice questions
Exam content
Counseling procedures and practices
Intensive study and knowledge of pharmacy as well as psychoactive substances
Counseling theory
Professional issues that are related to comprehensive knowledge of fields in this particular area.
CAC I Requirements
Addiction counseling skills 21 hours
Client Record Management 14 hours
Principles of Addiction Treatment 21 hours
Ethical Issues in the Alcohol and Drug Clinical setting 14 hours
Diversity in Treatment Populations 14 hours
CACII Requirements
With 3000 hours of supervised work experience along with approved trainings and 14 hours of elective classes.
Motivational Interviewing 14 hours.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy 14 hours
Differential Assessment and Treatment Planning 14 hours
Group Counseling Skills 21 hours
Pharmacology I 14 hours
Pharmacology II 14 hours
Work hours from another state can be documented on the DORA Work Certification Form with the supervised work hours bearing credentials that are equivalent to CAC III or LAC.
